Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling, most ofen in the arms and legs, but occasionally in other body parts. Occuring when the channels and nodes that transport lymph are impaired, this condition can develop immediately after surgery that disrupts the lymphatic system, or months to years following cancer treatment. Trama and infection are also common causes. In addition to swelling, symptoms of lymphedema may include a feeling of heaviness, cosmetic deformity, decreased limb function, skin changes, open wounds and infection in teh involved area.

Comprehensive management of lymphedema includes manual lymph drainage, use of a compression pump, multi-layer bandaging, therapeutic exercise, compression garments and patient education.
